So, right as the kids were wrapping up their third sun prints, the ones made with washers and wires and toys, a friend pulled up to deliver this wonderful violin for me. Ken Scully is a fantastic violinist, of Heliotrope Trio fame, and he has been coming around to play cello with Robin on the piano and has listened to me play and given me advice and encouragement. When Ken plays for me, I usually end up crying because it is so beautiful and I long to make my violin sound so sweet. At Tuesday’s class, however, there was none of that. It was spontaneous and lively and inspiring. As I mentioned in a previous post, Mary Bartell, of the Bartell Sisters quartet, was attending the art class and she brought her violin along having been told I am teaching myself to play. When Ken began to play this wonderful instrument, the one which has been referred to as the new-old violin, Mary got hers out and they played together. The other students came in and listened. It was great to watch these two communicate through their instruments. The music was wonderful. Mary went up to the house and played a piece with Robin at the piano and the other kids created oil pastel paintings on illustration board. I did notice some tapping and humming for the remaining minutes of the class. I was too caught up in the incredible sculptures the boys made based on their drawings and the diversity and expressiveness of the girls’ work that I forgot to snap pictures before sending them off with them. One young man left his drawing and his model here in the studio so I’ll be sure to snap that and post it later.
