Yesterday’s art class with the homeshool kids was quite extraordinary. Knowing a couple of the students would be away, we had planned a free day of painting with no formal instruction. Once that intention was set, everything started falling into place to make it a really stimulating day of creative exploration. First, a package arrived from my photographer friend in California, Carol Stevens, containing kits for the students to use in making sun prints. Then one of the moms thoughtfully arranged for two other students to join us so I would have my full class of five. She brought with her two talented girls, one of whom plays the viola in a quartet with her older sisters. OK, so we set to gathering objects from the yard for the first round of prints, which you can see above. The compositions were laid out on the photographic paper, which starts out blue and then the the waiting and watching begins.

After about a minute the prints are rinsed in water and laid out to dry. The kids then came up with the idea to print their feet and hands.

I wish I had a picture of those prints to share with you, but I was distracted when a violinist friend of mine dropped by to bring me a new, but quite old and wonderful, violin. More on that as well as the construction project update later.
