One day I really will write up the story of the canoeing trip of last week from which two of us emerged thrilled to be alive and the other three came out as heroes. Carol and I paddled in circles, cutting up and laughing hysterically as the do-gooders in the other canoe stopped to rescue every overturned or trapped boater and collect each bottle and can along the way. We joked about them earning their merit badges for life saving and environmental consciousness and then, before you could shake a paddle at it, a giant tree jumped in our way and required the services of the crew of the good ship Do Good, thus inspiring Robin and I to create these giant edible Merit Badges for each of them. Since Jerri had stopped in the night we were making them and witnessed the creation of hers, she helped us cart the kids’ rewards down to their shop (the Hummingbird Gallery on Main and yes those are Wendi’s paintings on the walls and Robert’s jewelry in the cases). The shop was hopping when we arrived and everyone was murmuring about what could be happening. It was great fun to watch Wendi and then Robert take in these creations and realize the story of our day on the river and their status as scouts worthy of official recognition had been told on a giant cookie. I can’t rightly say memorialized since the cookies were likely devoured by the end of the day.

Robert and Jerri took the cookies to the back room for a closer look.

The story, when I finally tell it, will include details about the magic apple, the missing shoe, and the baggie of yellow spermicide, as well as important info on the very best baggies to use when on a float trip.
