new 12 x 24 painting: it’s for Amy

When Kate was here last week, interviewing me for the Carrol County News, she asked for the title of this painting and then the reason it was named that. I laughed and she said she had to ask. I had to answer, but I felt a little silly about the reason. It’s a line from the movie Tootsie, a film I saw so many times in high school that, to this day, I can recite much of. Jessica Lange’s character, Julie, was kind of a wuss in my opinion, but oh, so appealing in her vulnerability and everything in her apartment was set up just right for us to have warm fuzzies over her. She wore soft, pale clothing, was shot with a soft focus, and her apartment was decorated in very soft pastels. Her baby’s name was Amy and toward the end of the film Dorothy (Dustin Hoffman) brings a gift to Julie’s dressing room which Julie says she can’t accept. Dorothy says, “It’s for Amy.” Julie replies, “Oh.” In my head, the film rolls on once I’ve said the title and I hear Julie’s humble “Oh.”

This is one of those titles that just popped into my head while working on the painting and stuck. The painting has many layers of different pale colors which are hard to capture on film, but which result in the painting having a different glow under different light conditions. By the way, I watched Dustin Hoffman on Inside the Actor’s Studio tonight and wow! I love him more than ever. He strikes me as a person of great integrety who remembers the importance of play. I find that to be a very powerful and attractive combination. Tootsie is my all time favorite movie for all the small moments that reveal larger themes. Hmm, sounds like I love Tootsie for the same reason I choose most of my painting subjects.
